Laser Eye Surgery and other Eye Procedures

Corrective eye surgery is an ever changing field with new technologies coming on the forefront every year. It's estimated that about 20 percent of Americans have vision problems that can be corrected by a variety of eye surgeries.

LASER EYE SURGERY

Of the more than 800,000 people each year who have corrective eye surgery, 98 percent usually have some type of laser procedure. Corrective eye surgery includes laser eye surgery procedures that include: conventional LASIK, wavefront-guided LASIK, surface ablation, implantable lenses, phakic lenses, lens exchanges.Cost of LASIK eye surgery and laser eye surgery cost is a big consideration if you don't have health insurance.

Conventional LASIK

About 400,000 choose to have conventional LASIK treatments, in which doctors cut a flap in the corneal tissue and reshape the cornea with a laser. This laser eye surgery  procedure takes about ten minutes for each eye. Recovery time is a few hours.

Cost of LASIK eye surgery is usually about $1,700 per eye. Low Cost Eye Surgery - Cost of Laser Eye Surgery and Cost of LASIK Eye Surgery

It's well-proven for those with problems like mild nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism.

However this laser eye surgery procedure can cause vision problems regarding glare, shadows and halos. It can’t be performed on people with thin or flat corneas.

Wavefront-guided LASIK

This is an advanced eye surgery procedure that uses light technology to map the optical system precisely and uses computer technology to guide the laser to reshape the cornea.

Cost of LASIK eye surgery is about $2,100 for each eye. Low Cost Eye Surgery - Cost of Laser Eye Surgery and Cost of LASIK Eye Surgery

It is more precise than the conventional LASIK and can be used on people with higher-order vision aberrations.

It only reduces but doesn’t eliminate side effects such as double vision, halos and glare.

Surface ablation

Surface ablation procedures include PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) or the more recently developed LASEK or Epi-LASIK. Doctors don’t cut a flap in the corneal tissue but remove the outermost corneal layer and reshape it with a laser. Recovery time is four to seven days.

The cost of eye surgery is about $1,800 for each eye. Low Cost Eye Surgery - Cost of Laser Eye Surgery and Cost of LASIK Eye Surgery

The eye doctors don’t cut the corneal tissue, eliminating potential problems. People with thinner corneas are eligible.

However it's less proven than conventional LASIK and has a longer recovery time.

Other corrective eye surgeries

IMPLANTABLE LENSES

Although this corrective eye surgery procedure has been available in Europe for more than ten years, people are just beginning to receive implantable lenses in the United States.

Phakic lenses

In this procedure lenses are implanted within the eye, between the cornea and iris, without removal of the eye’s natural lens. The first phakic lens approved by the FDA is the Verisyse lens.

The cost of this eye surgery procedure is between $3,100 and $4,100 for each eye. Low Cost Eye Surgery - Cost of Laser Eye Surgery and Cost of LASIK Eye Surgery

What is good is that this corrective eye procedure does not affect the natural shape of the eye, and the operation is totally reversible.

However major surgery is required. And the lenses are only approved for use in moderate to severe nearsightedness.

LENS EXCHANGES

Since the early 1940s, doctors have been replacing the natural lens of the eye to treat cataracts, the medical companies manufacture replacement lenses for cataract surgery.

The cost of this eye surgery procedure is about $3,100. This procedure is often covered by health insurance. Low Cost Eye Surgery - Cost of Laser Eye Surgery and Cost of LASIK Eye Surgery

This procedure is considered medically necessary and is the only known treatment for cataracts. One eye at a time is usually done.

However synthetic lenses aren’t as pliable or quick to focus as the eye’s natural lens is though.

These are most of the corrective eye surgery and laser eye surgery procedures available today.  This site will be updating with information and cost of new LASIK eye surgeries, laser eye surgeries and other eye surgeries and procedures as they develop.
